How It Works

Tested in Front of You. Paid the Same Day.

No back-room guesswork. Every item is tested at the counter, priced against the live market, and paid on the spot.

Transparent, Every Step

How We Test Your Gold

We use acid testing, done in front of you at the counter — never in the back room. Here’s exactly how it works.

  1. 01

    Scratch test

Your item is gently rubbed against a black testing stone, leaving a small streak of the metal on the stone's surface.

  2. 02

    Apply acid

A drop of testing acid, matched to a specific karat level, is applied directly to the streak.

  3. 03

    Observe the reaction

If the streak dissolves or changes color, the metal is below that karat. If it stays intact, the metal meets or exceeds it.

  4. 04

    Narrow it down

We repeat the process with different acid strengths until we've identified the exact karat.

  5. 05

    Weigh and calculate

Your item is weighed on a precision scale, and your payout is calculated from that day's market gold price, the purity, and the weight.

We Show You the Work

Every scratch test, every drop of acid, every reading on the scale happens at the counter, in plain view. You’ll see exactly how your payout is calculated before you agree to anything.

Before You Visit

What to Bring

  1. 01

    A valid photo ID

A government-issued ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport) is required for every transaction — standard practice for licensed dealers.

  2. 02

    The item itself

Gold, diamonds, watches, coins, or bullion — bring it as-is. No cleaning or polishing needed.

  3. 03

Boxes or papers, if you have them

Original boxes, certificates, or appraisals for watches or diamonds can help, but they're optional — we test everything on site either way.

Example

Sarah brings in a 14K gold necklace that weighs 10 grams.

Today’s 14K gold price is about $80 per gram.
10 grams × $80 = $800 — that’s the necklace’s market value.

Gold City Jewelry pays 80%–100% of that, so Sarah walks out with $640 to $800, depending on the necklace’s condition and karat verification.
